Hepatitis B Symptoms

Hepatitis B, sometimes called hep B, is a highly contagious viral infection that can be transmitted through exposure to blood, semen, and vaginal fluids. The infection can be acute (lasting a few months) or chronic (lasting more than six months, sometimes for life). Some people have no symptoms at all, while others experience serious illness.

Symptoms of hepatitis B usually show up within two or three months of exposure, and may include:

  • Flu-like symptoms (including fever, severe fatigue, and loss of appetite)
  • Pain in the upper abdomen
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Jaundice (yellowing of the whites of the eyes or the skin)
  • Darkened urine or pale, clay-like stools

Hepatitis B Complications

For most people, a hepatitis B infection resolves on its own after one to three months. However, some people experience severe acute illness, which can lead to liver failure.

In chronic cases, the virus remains in the body and requires long-term treatment to manage complications of progressive liver damage. Long-term consequences of chronic hepatitis B can include:

  • Cirrhosis of the liver
  • Liver cancer
  • Death (in about one in five cases of chronic hepatitis B)

Pregnant people can also pass hepatitis B onto their babies during pregnancy or birth. Unless it’s treated right away, most babies with hepatitis B will develop chronic infections. Fortunately, there are things that can help prevent transmission to newborns, and early treatments for neonatal infections are very effective.
