Learn About Syphilis
Syphilis Symptoms
Early symptoms of syphilis can be hard to notice and may be confused for other conditions. Plus, they come and go as the infection progresses, which is why testing is so important.
Rates of syphilis have been climbing in recent years, but many people are still unfamiliar with its symptoms. Early symptoms can take a month or more to appear, and they vary from person to person. They can include:
- Small, usually painless sores on the penis, vulva, anus, or mouth
- A non-itchy rash, usually on the palms or soles of the feet
- White patches in the mouth
- Flu-like symptoms (like fever, fatigue, headache, aching joints, and swollen glands)
- Weight loss
- Patchy hair loss
Syphilis Complications
Syphilis progresses through four stages that can last for years, including a “latent” or hidden stage, in which a person’s symptoms disappear and they may think that the infection went away. However, the bacteria remain in the body, and the infection is still easily passed on through intimate contact with another person.
If left untreated, syphilis leads to more serious complications that can be irreversible or even life-threatening, including:
- Memory loss
- Neurological disorders
- Mental health conditions
- Destruction of soft tissue and bone
- Blindness
- Loss of hearing
If a pregnant person has syphilis, it can also be passed on to their baby during pregnancy or birth (a condition called congenital syphilis). This can cause things like miscarriage, stillbirth, or birth defects.
